Biodiversity is the wealth and diversity that exists in every form of life on earth. Biodiversity includes the genetic diversity between living organisms and the diversity between species. Ecosystems are the result of the interaction of the natural environment with the biodiversity. It is the basis of many human activities and crucial for agricultural production.

-It is estimated that species extinction occurs 100 to 1000 times faster due to human activity. If the misuse of the environment and ecosystems continues, half of the world's species will be permanently lost by 2100. Climate change is adversely affecting biodiversity by destroying the natural environment of some organisms.

- The population of wild species, plants and animals which contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and are crucial for agriculture, among them pollinators (eg bees), soil microorganisms and natural enemies is rapidly declining

-Of the 7,000 species that can be grown for food, nowadays humanity uses 30 to cover 90% of daily consumption. Wheat, rice and corn make up about 50% of world production

-Without bees 75% of the plants that are an important part of our diet would not have any fruit at all

-The population of wildlife species has decreased by 68% between 1970 and 2018

-The world livestock is based on 40 species of animals, with the minority producing meat, milk and eggs.

-There is overfishing in 1/3 of the fish population

-About 1% of the species are lost every year

-In 2020 in the member states of the European Union (27 countries) the protected areas cover 25.7% of the land area and 11.1% of the sea waters

Biodiversity is of paramount importance for both the ecosystem and the well-being of societies, the economy, the food security of the 8 billion people.
